Here is a look at the current hazards across the area.  There is currently a winter storm warning across the southern tier counties.  There is winter weather advisory slightly further tot he north.

Here is a look at simulated radar from 8 AM this morning through 8 AM tomorrow morning.  Some very heavy snow looks to develop across the southern tier counties this afternoon into the overnight.  Some thundersnow cannot be ruled out as well.  Some warmer temperatures are going to help to melt some of the snow, however, heavy snowfall rates will overcome these warmer pavement temperatures leading to treacherous travel conditions/ slick spots.  Please watch the video for latest on timing/ risk.  

Here is a look at the preferred snowfall amounts with this system.  Some snowfall amounts of 1″ – 2″ per hour will be possible later this afternoon which is going to lead to higher snowfall amounts and treacherous travel.  A skinny/ narrow band of 6″ – 9″ will be possible across southern portions of the state.  Lesser amounts the further north.  Some minor pavement impacts cannot be rules out near Des Moines.  A lot of this snow should melt upon contact with the ground due to warmer pavement temperatures.  Please watch the video for complete details.
