4-13-18 Northern Plains: Dangerous April Blizzard has has begun and will continue throughout the weekend. B.

Video:

Good Friday afternoon.

The long awaited April Blizzard has begun to put down snow in portions of South Dakota this morning. We’re already seeing some heavy bands of snow develop this morning. This snow will slowly work off to the east throughout the day today and some of the rain ongoing in eastern portions of South Dakota and Southern Minnesota will begin to changeover to snow. Here’s a look at the simulated radar into Sunday. This is a long duration snow event and snow will fall in spots for more than 24 hours. With snow rates as high as 1-2″/hour at times, very high snow accumulations are possible. Note, we still have rain risks for southeastern portions of South Dakota and Southern Minnesota into tonight. We could also see some freezing rain mix in as warm air lingers aloft while surface temperatures drop. Not going to be a huge deal, but it could cut down on snow totals by a few inches.

Wind gusts of 45-60 MPH with isolated higher gusts are possible throughout the duration of snowfall. Blizzard conditions are likely for the majority of this system. This will create blowing snow, very high snow drifts and whiteout conditions into Sunday morning. Travel will likely be impossible during this storm.

Models have really converged on a solution that paints the southern third of South Dakota with very heavy snowfall as well as into Southern Minnesota. These areas, including just south of Pierre, South Dakota and near Sioux Falls, South Dakota, could see as much as 18-24″ of snow. Minneapolis is also certainly at play for more than a foot of snow.

Given where the heaviest snow will fall combined with the strongest wind gusts, here are the areas that will see the most extreme impacts with this Blizzard.

Behind this system, temperatures likely fall into the single digits where snow fell. Here’s a look at morning lows on Sunday morning:
