4-10-18 Northern Plains: Tracking snow chances over the next few days and latest update on potent late week storm. B.

Today’s Video (6:00):

Good Tuesday morning everyone!

A few scattered snow showers have developed for portions of far Eastern North Dakota and Western Minnesota this morning. These will progress east throughout the day, but overall, only a coating is expected in areas that see snow.

A system develops tomorrow that could put down a swath of accumulating snow and some light freezing rain. Here’s a look at the simulated radar for that system:

Mix of wintry precipitation and rain begins to break out early tomorrow morning and progresses east throughout the day. Snow continues into Minnesota overnight before exiting Thursday morning with just some lingering snow showers in Minnesota possible Thursday morning. Some areas could see 2-3″ of snow with this system:

Light freezing rain accumulations are possible Wednesday morning into Wednesday afternoon:

We then turn our attention to the late week storm. Data is consistent with the potential for heavy accumulating snow and very strong winds that could lead to Blizzard conditions for portions of the area.

Precipitation really starts to break out late Thursday into Friday for the Western Dakotas. Rain is likely on the southern side of this in South Dakota to begin, but rain likely changes to heavy snow for portions of Western South Dakota Friday with snow beginning late in the day on Friday for Minnesota. The snow tracks west to east throughout Friday night and into Saturday with snow continuing for much of the day Saturday for South Dakota and Minnesota. Here’s a look at current snowfall guidance and probabilities for 12″+ of snow.

Wind gusts will likely be high enough to achieve Blizzard conditions.

We’ll be sure to update on this major storm system for late week. Adjustments are still certainly possible, but data has consistently shown the potential for heavy snowfall. Luckily, some will start the week off with spring-like weather with temperatures in the 50s/60s in Southern South Dakota.
