3-8-18 Central Plains Forecast: Pesky, light precipitation this weekend….quiet pattern most of next week. N.

Video (5:30):

Good Thursday morning! Latest drought monitor this morning showing severe to extreme drought conditions continuing over southwest Kansas:

Pesky precipitation is expected from mainly late tomorrow night through the first half of Sunday across the region.  A light wintry mix moves in across portions of Nebraska Saturday morning , then pesky light rain across the region Saturday afternoon.  Heading into Sunday morning, a light rain and snow continues across central and western Iowa, with the disturbance moving south into Missouri through the day.  We should see skies clearing out from northwest to southeast through the day Sunday.

The data is at odds regarding any wet snow potential Saturday night into Sunday.  I still feel there could be an area around eastern Nebraska through western Iowa where 1-2″ of wet snow may fall.  Data should come in better agreement tomorrow.  Shown below is the European snow (left) and GFS model snow (right).

Winds will not be a huge factor today or tomorrow, but the western half of the region will get rather windy Saturday afternoon/night with 30-40 mph gusts possible.  Still nothing like the wind we had earlier this week!  Forecast wind gusts from today through Sunday shown below:

Temperatures will moderate through Saturday, with mild conditions for locations south and west.  Turning colder area-wide by Sunday.

As mentioned in the video, much of next week looks very quiet.  The 7-day precipitation is under a tenth inch for many locations…portions of southern Missouri will pick up a quarter to local half-inch of rain this weekend.  The European tries to bring precipitation across western Kansas for the middle of next week…I think this is likely overdone.  We will monitor the end of next week into the following weekend for our next storm system to target the area.
