Video (7:51):
Good Tuesday morning! We are seeing brief locally dense fog develop this morning, especially the western half of the state. Winds will quickly pick up between 8-10am, which will mix out any fog during that time. Expect conditions to become very windy late morning through the afternoon. Strongest wind gusts will be found across the southern half of the state, where gusts to 40 mph expected out of the west to southwest. Hold on to your hat…and that steering wheel today!
An upper-level low will drop southward into the region tonight. This will bring scattered rain showers by mid-afternoon (likely mixed with some graupel), then mixing and changing to snow showers from west to east this evening through the overnight hours. Many areas across the state will have the risk for general coatings of snow with a few locally brief, intense bursts. The upper low will move east of the state on Wednesday, meaning diminishing coverage of snow showers through the day. Areas east and northeast may see a few additional light snow showers or flurries tomorrow afternoon.
Here is a look at snowfall potential: Remember there will likely not be this much on the ground due to some melting, but some areas can whiten the ground. I think there could be very localized bands of 1-2″ snowfall in northern Indiana…other-wise, general scattered dustings to a localized half-inch, mostly on the grassy and elevated surfaces.
Additional upper level energy rotating through will maintain the risk for a few additional snow showers Wednesday night through Thursday, especially eastern and northeast areas, somewhat enhanced there by Lake Michigan. This can drop additional light coatings in spots.
Temperatures in central and southern Indiana hover near freezing overnight, and that combined with the warm pavement from today’s mild air will limit accumulation on pavement, with the exception being where we see locally heavy bursts to create a few slicks spots. Northern Indiana will be a bit colder, where slick areas on roads will be more possible. A MUCH colder day tomorrow with highs in the 30s, combined with gusty winds making it feel colder.
In the video we discuss the latest trends heading into late week….watching for a possible rain/snow mix Friday night, and a lower confidence forecast for Sunday. Have a great day!
