Video (7 min):
Good Tuesday morning! Current radar showing a large upper-level low spinning over Iowa. This system will work southeast into the state this afternoon.
Future radar shows snow showers building into northwest Illinois, then scattered rain and snow showers really ramp up this afternoon and evening, most numerous central and north. I do expect some brief, locally heavy bursts of snow this afternoon which will lower visibility. Snow showers will be most numerous into mid-evening before diminishing in coverage overnight. Central and especially southern areas see sunshine this morning before clouds filter in this afternoon.
Scattered light dustings will be the general rule central and north, with the best chances north where a localized 1″ pocket can’t be ruled out. That said, air temperatures above freezing will melt much of the snow that the models try to accumulate this afternoon, with the best accumulation chance during the early to mid evening.
Temperatures will stay above freezing in northern Illinois for much of the afternoon, then fall slightly below freezing here tonight:
Check out the wind forecast… expect gusty winds today especially over the southern half of the state, where gusts 40 mph+ are possible:
A wind advisory is in place from noon to 5pm CST today across southern Illinois:
