3-5-18 Northern Plains Forecast: Major winter storm brings heavy snow and wind into Tuesday…calmer mid-week!

Video (5:38):

Current alerts across the area…a lot going on!

Latest forecast radar through Tuesday evening: Snow will be in full force this afternoon across North Dakota through east-central South Dakota….rain showers/freezing drizzle over Minnesota will transition to snow from this afternoon into the evening.  Snow will gradually wind down on Tuesday.

Some light icing is possible from western to southeast Minnesota this afternoon before you transition to snow:

Here is our thinking on snowfall amounts:

It will be quite windy as well with the strongest winds in South Dakota.  Winds will gradually decrease in intensity Tuesday.

Temperatures will be in the upper 20s/near 30 under the heavy snowfall, which will make this more of a wet snow.  The snowpack across the area (exception of southwest South Dakota) will lead to chilly air this week.

This system is bringing copious amounts of moisture…with total liquid precipitation 0.7″ to 1.5″ in many locations….southwest South Dakota gets largely left out.
