A winter weather advisory is effect for a portion of northern Illinois tonight. This is where the greatest concern is for freezing rain to create slick spots, and perhaps some minor sleet/snow accumulation:
The future radar on the NAM 3-km captures this well. Main time-frame is from 11pm to 8am CDT for a swath of freezing rain.
Temperatures in northern Illinois will be 30-33º as the precipitation moves in. Greatest concern for ice will be on bridges/overpasses and untreated areas (especially elevated surfaces). Temperatures jump above freezing here by mid-morning Saturday.
In general, 0.2″ to 0.3″ of moisture with this system. Notice far northeast Illinois stays completely dry.
The weekend isn’t all bad! Showers gradually dissipate through the day, but clouds/light rain will linger much of the day across central Illinois. Northeast portions of the state break into sunshine Saturday afternoon (shown below). For Sunday, temperatures become mild state-wide along with some sunshine.
Targeting another system late Monday into Wednesday. There is the chance for some wet snow, more info in the video.
