3-1-19 Northern Plains: Tracking two more waves of accumulating snow. Dangerously cold start to next week. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Friday morning everyone! We have a healthy swath of snow pushing from west to east across the area with moderate snowfall rates in Eastern SD into SW Minnesota. Additional accumulations are going to occur with this wave as it slowly pushes east throughout the day today.

Here’s a look at the simulated radar throughout the rest of today. The heaviest bands will likely setup in SE SD and into Southern Minnesota where low-level convergence lines up to produce the greatest upward motion. An additional 3-6″ is possible with that wave as advertised by the HRRR model below.

Our attention then turns to snow that will develop with a system late tonight and tomorrow. An arctic front will begin to dive south and spawn some scattered snow showers and squalls across Northern Minnesota and North Dakota. Amounts will generally be light and less than 1″ before the main wave develops in Western South Dakota into tomorrow morning. The arctic front will cut off snow from north to south allowing SW SD t0 have the best chance to see the heaviest snow totals:

Here’s a look at anticipated snow totals with this wave:

Strong winds behind this system on Sunday and Monday will lead to extremely cold wind chills and blowing and drifting snow threats:

Beyond this system the pattern will be drier with only small snow chances early next week (Monday afternoon) for some scattered snow showers. Temperatures will be the big story as they crash into Sunday morning behind the arctic front:

Wind chills will be dangerously cold Sunday morning dipping into the -40s in North Dakota.
