Good Thursday morning! Current radar is showing a batch of light snow showers across Illinois, and this will continue to work east across central and northern Indiana this morning. Flurries should work northeast and out of central Indiana by 10-11am, and by early afternoon in northeast Indiana. We should see a decent amount of sunshine build in later this morning and afternoon.
A significant snow event is about to take shape across far northern Indiana from tonight through Friday night. Here is the forecast radar from 6pm this evening to 4am Saturday. We think snow spreads in from Gary to Angola 9pm to midnight ET. A continuous west to east oriented band of snow continues all day Friday. There will be a SHARP cut-off between the areas under the heavy snow, and where it is completely dry.
Here is our current thinking on snow amounts through 6am Saturday. 8-12″ from Gary to South Bend to Angola, with localized pockets here possibly seeing in excess of 12″! Totals rapidly taper as you head southward. Fort Wayne will be one of those locations in the middle of the gradient…which means a tight snow gradient possible from the north to south side of the city. Most of central Indiana misses out on tomorrow’s snow event.
Check out the high temperatures tomorrow….a tight gradient across northern Indiana, while much of central and southern Indiana enjoy a mild day.
We are watching the weekend for mixed frozen precipitation chances to create impacts to travel. A southwest flow aloft will bring in moisture across the state Saturday through the first part of Sunday, while at the surface, an arctic high undercutting that warmer air will allow temperatures to turn colder. This may result in some light freezing rain for parts of the state especially Saturday night. Further north and west, additional snow is possible. We will need to fine-tune this forecast over the next couple of days!
