2-6-18 Indiana Update: Latest on significant icing risk south tonight and light snowfall. N.

Video (7 min):

Good Tuesday morning! Our team has been going over the latest data the threat for freezing rain and snow tonight.  Here is a map showing our thinking for where the greatest ice concerns are tonight.  The red zone along the Ohio River from Evansville, Tell City, and Madison have potential to see more significant icing of a quarter-inch with locally higher ice totals.  This will make travel nearly impossible in these areas.  The zone from Vincennes to Bedford and Seymour will transition from snow to sleet and light freezing rain, with icing of 0.05″ to 0.10″ possible.  Areas north of there in the yellow will see light snow transitioning to freezing drizzle during the pre-dawn hours, enough to leave a glaze of ice up to I-70.

Regarding snowfall, we still see two bands with this system.  A band of 2-3″ north of Lafayette and Peru, with another enhanced band possible across southeast central Indiana, near Columbus, Seymour to Batesville where 2-3″ can’t be ruled out.  That will depend how much of the moisture falls as snow before transitioning to freezing drizzle.  Realistically, Indy likely sees less than 1″, with some spots over north-central Indiana seeing very little snow of only 0.5″ or less.

Here is the latest forecast radar from 7pm this evening to noon Wednesday.  Precipitation will rapidly move into southern Indiana from 10pm to 1am ET, with precipitation working north and filling in with light snow across central Indiana throughout pre-dawn Wednesday.  Precipitation is out of the state by 10am ET Wednesday.
