February is wrapping up as a fairly mild and VERY wet month. 13th wettest February on record for Indy, and just the 48th warmest dating back to 1871.
Check out how many days of the month recorded precipitation:
While we had all that rain, those storms brought copious amounts of snow this month to the upper Midwest. These cities saw their snowiest February on record:
Several cities out west also saw their snowiest February on record, and that came with a very cold February across the west and the northern Plains. The southeast was rather warm. February 2019 temperature anomalies:
Moving ahead, winter is NOT done. In fact (as I’m sure you’ve heard), there is a storm system which looks to bring accumulating snows to the Plains, Ohio Valley, and Northeast. That system is still well out in the Pacific Ocean, and won’t come on shore until Saturday. That said, this system IS getting sampled from satellite data ingested into the models, but we’ll get an even better handle once the energy approaches and moves onshore into Saturday.
Very strong high pressure in the upper-levels across Alaska into the arctic regions this weekend will allow very cold air dislodge southward into the lower 48. At the same time, we’ll see a system shoot out across the country. Forecast 500mb chart for Saturday:
This system brings widespread snows across the Plains Saturday night into Sunday, then the storm gradually strengthens as it tracks from the southern Plains to the mid-Atlantic. The data has become more clustered on the track, but these subtle differences in strength/track/speed make a big difference the extent of snow. Accumulating snow is likely…is it up to a few inches or a major snowstorm? Both options are on the table still. The solutions showing lower snowfall also have a bias to be too progressive, so that is worth taking into consideration.
Latest data from Saturday night through early Monday:
Fv-3 GFS snowfall through early next week shows a wide swath of several inches:
Behind this storm, brutal cold follows early next week. Temperatures will be near 30º below normal for many early next week. Check out these HIGHS on Monday. Several locations will see record cold highs, as well as record cold lows.
Here’s what the temperatures from normal look like as a 5-day average across the nation from this weekend through late next week:
The extremeness of the cold will ease in the East and South later next week, with some improvements heading closer to mid-March.
