Today’s Video:
Good Wednesday morning everyone! A quiet start to the day across the area with only a few flurries on the radar. High pressure will dominate the weather today with mostly sunny skies for many today across the region:
As we work into the late afternoon and evening hours clouds will begin to expand in Western South Dakota and a weak wave of energy will work in overnight tonight. There is enough energy with this system to support 1-2″ of snow, but lack of dynamic forcing will likely prevent higher totals.
We’ll have another wave to deal with Thursday night into Friday as a clipper moves from west to east across the area and leads to a swath of light snow – perhaps 2-4″. Data has consistently trended this system a tad further north and delayed the arrival of the arctic front. Given some volatility in data we’ll hold off on making a snow map until tomorrow but prefer the European solution as of now:
The delay of the arctic front has allowed another system to trend quite a bit further north into the area Saturday ahead of the front. This looks to primarily impact South Dakota pending further north trends. Key will be timing of arctic high and front and evolution of the prior systems. Regardless, if you’re in South Dakota you should be on watch for the potential of accumulating snow on Saturday:
Temperatures will continue to average well below normal with the coldest air arriving late Saturday and early next week. Here’s a look at temperatures over the next 4 days:
Wind chills will turn dangerously cold Saturday morning through Tuesday with wind chills getting into the -30s and -40s on Sunday and Monday morning for parts of the area:
Winds will gust up to 30 MPH today so we would watch out for some blowing and drifting snow at times, but overall wind doesn’t look to be a huge issue over the next 4 days:
Here’s a look at total precipitation over the next 7 days from the European model:
