2-23-18 Central Plains Forecast: Tracking a winter storm for Saturday – quiet Sunday! N.

Video (7:33):

Snowfall reports over the past 24 hours:

We have winter weather alerts going into effect tonight through Saturday night.  Winter storm watch for northwest Iowa, winter weather advisories for central Nebraska and northwest Kansas.

Forecast radar from 7pm this evening through 6am Sunday:

Here is the current thinking on snowfall totals for Saturday.  We are not looking at a huge storm, but certainly some decent amounts for some.  I think northwest Iowa sees the highest amounts where 5-8″ is possible.  It is possible central Nebraska ends up on the lower end of the 3-6″ forecast.

Watch for some freezing rain is possible mainly Saturday morning from central Kansas to northern Missouri and portions of Iowa:

Winds will pick up Saturday night as the low pulls northeast into Minnesota.  Iowa could see gusts 20-30 mph, then decreasing wind on Sunday as high pressure builds in.

Severe storms are possible Saturday evening across southeast Missouri, with damaging wind gusts the highest concern.  I wouldn’t rule out a spin-up tornado, especially in the boot heel.

Total precipitation through Saturday night: Another 1-3″ of rain in southern Missouri, while the rest of the area sees a general 0.1″-0.3″.
