Today’s Video:
Good Friday morning everyone. We are watching snow expand across South Dakota this morning and snow likely continues to expand and intensify this morning and continue throughout much of the day today:
This wave will be relatively slow moving and not fully exit the area until tomorrow morning. Moderate. snow at times are possible throughout the day today especially in South Dakota, but the development of another heavy band overnight today is certainly possible into SE Minnesota where some weak low-level frontogenesis develops:
Overall, a band of 3-6″ is possible from Pierre to Eureka with widespread 1-4″ throughout much of the Eastern two-thirds of the area by tomorrow evening:
Behind this wave the strong storm we have been tracking all week will begin to push northward into the area especially after 6PM tomorrow. Very heavy snow will fall at times with extremely low visibilities and blizzard like conditions possible at winds gust form 30 – 45 MPH. Initially SE Minnesota could begin as a freezing rain/rain mix but eventually transition to heavy snow overnight Saturday.
Here’s a look at snowfall accumulation with this storm. It will be relatively quick moving but given the intensity of the low pressure, very heavy snow likely follows in a narrow band from NW Iowa into SE Minnesota. I do believe a band of 12″+ is on the table. There will be a very sharp cutoff with a very sharp gradient on both the north and south side of the snow swath. Any shift in the track can mean the difference between a few inches and a foot.
Winds and visibility will also be an issue with this system with wind during the storm gusting from 30 – 45 MPH and increasing into Sunday. Issues with blowing and drifting snow with be a problem throughout the day on Sunday.
Temperatures will plummet into Monday morning with dangerous wind chills in Northwest portions of the area and temperatures falling well below zero:
