Good Thursday morning. A wintry mix impacting the region this morning. Current radar as of 8:30 AM CT shown below:
We may see somewhat of a lull in precipitation this morning before another surge of moisture works in this afternoon through tonight. Warmer air will surge in aloft across Iowa, leading to a switch to freezing rain. The best chances for snow will reside across Nebraska and northwest Iowa, although these areas likely see freezing drizzle at times. Likely the worst conditions set in from 6pm this evening to 3am CT Friday.
Freezing rain could add up to 0.2″ in several areas from west-central Iowa to northwest Missouri, southeast Nebraska, and east central Kansas. The amounts in central Missouri are from freezing drizzle this morning…that area will be warmer tonight.
2-4″ snow potential in northwest Iowa, and across west central and northern Nebraska. I have circled the areas where a localized higher total is possible.
Watching a potent storm for Saturday, which could bring several inches of snow from northwest Kansas, central Nebraska, and northwest Iowa, with rain southeast of the low track.
Data is actually in decent agreement on placement of snow, but some variance in totals. It does appear some will get 6″ or more! Central Nebraska and northwest Iowa seems to be the best chance at this time.
The system will pull out Saturday night, then quiet weather returns (finally!) for early next week. 7-day precipitation:
