2-20-19 Northern Plains: Timing accumulating snow today plus several more waves of snow through the weekend. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Wednesday morning everyone! Heavy snow is working across portions of Southern Minnesota this morning with additional snow totals of up to 5-8″ on the table throughout the day today. Here’s a look at the current radar:

Here’s a look at the simulated radar for the remaining of the day. Note the heaviest snow will begin to exit NE MN by ~4/5 PM but moderate to heavy snow at times are certainly still possible now into the early afternoon for Central portions of Minnesota as the system continues to lift northward.

Here’s a look at additional snow totals for today:

Behind this system we won’t see much of a break in precipitation as snow showers linger into tomorrow in far Northern North Dakota and Northern Minnesota. Another wave will develop later tomorrow and into Thursday night which could drop some light snow totals in Southern South Dakota. Here’s a look at simulated radar for that wave and potential accumulation from tonight at midnight to tomorrow night at midnight:

Another wave will develop into Friday morning and slowly progress from SW SD to the northeast throughout the day on Friday and continuing into Minnesota Friday night before finally exiting ~mid-day on Saturday. Overall this looks to be light-moderate snow and and we favor a solution somewhat similar to the FV3-GFS right now. Still a lot of discrepancies on this system and it’s a ways out so expect further adjustments in forecast ideas.

This will set the stage for a robust storm system late Saturday and into Sunday which could lead to heavy snow and strong winds especially in SE portions of the area:
