Good Friday morning! Waking up to much colder temperatures as an arctic high moves overhead. Light lake-effect snow showers will impact South Bend, Goshen to Angola, before ending this afternoon. Otherwise, expect abundant sunshine with highs only in the lower to middle 20s.
The Weekend Set-Up: Expecting increasing clouds overnight and through the day Saturday, as warmer air lifts into the state. A few flurries can’t be ruled out overnight and Saturday (mainly north) but dry air will keep much of the day-time Saturday dry. We should see areas of snow showers develop by tomorrow evening and increase through the overnight hours into Sunday morning. The good news is that temperatures will be around freezing, so this will limit travel impacts. As we go through the day Sunday, temperatures throughout central and southern Indiana will warm above freezing into early afternoon. An arctic front will move through Sunday afternoon and night, leading to much colder air. Sunday afternoon/night the greatest concern for travel impacts as temperatures crash behind the front with an additional pulse of light snow. Shown below is a loop of the European model from 1pm Saturday to 4am Monday (ET):
Here is a look at temperatures from 1pm Saturday to 7am Monday:
Here is an idea of snow amounts through the weekend. Greatest accumulations across northern Indiana, with limited totals central and south. Keep in mind we likely get light accumulations on grass/rooftops Saturday night, but most of it melts central/south on Sunday before additional light accumulations Sunday evening. Bottom-line, in many places there will never be this much on the ground:
Next week remains active! Our next disturbance looks to arrive Monday evening/night with 1-3″ of snow on the table, right now favoring areas north for the greatest potential.
A “potential” bigger storm system may impact the state Tuesday into Wednesday. No surprise, we continue to see differences in the data regarding the strength of this system and precipitation types. Much can still change with this storm at this distance. Keep close tabs on the forecast over the coming days as we start to get a better handle. For now, best to focus on one system at a time.
