2-2-18 Illinois Forecast: Watching for light snow this weekend..greater snow chances early next week. N.

Video:

Expecting dry weather today with mostly sunny skies and temperatures staying below freezing.  Clouds increase this evening, with a threat for a few snow showers in northern sections of the state 7pm-1am, but lower confidence in this given how dry the air will be.  Light snow expected to build into extreme northern parts of the state during the day Saturday, with areas of light rain and snow developing Saturday evening and night.  The best chance to pick up light accumulations will be in northeast sections of the state.  Temperatures fall throughout the day Sunday with an additional pulse of light snow likely.  Sunday afternoon will likely see the highest impact on roadways.  Snow will come to an end Sunday night.

Looking at amounts, most of the state sees very little in terms of accumulation.  The best chance over the northeast portion of the state.  We think the NAM is overdone on snow amounts near Chicago, but highlights where the greatest potential exists.

Temperature trends throughout the weekend: Watch for the arctic air to return Sunday afternoon-night.

Another disturbance will move into the state later Monday through the night, with a decent band of accumulating snow possible over the northern half of the state.  This could be a 2-4″ snowfall, right now favoring the northern half of the state.  Forecast radar off the European model 3pm CT Monday to 6am Tuesday shown here:

Just when that system departs, a potentially stronger wave moves into the state Tuesday into early Wednesday.  High confidence that a system is there, but low confidence on the intensity and precipitation types.  Stay tuned over the coming days as we get a better handle on these wintry threats.
