2-19-19 Northern Plains: Winter storm develops later today. Another major storm possible this weekend. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Tuesday morning everyone. Overall, not too much on the radar this morning but we’re starting to see a few flurries in SW South Dakota in what will be the initial wave of snow later this afternoon with light snow showers in Southwestern and South-Central SD. Most areas see less than 1″ with this initial wave. However, as the storm system intensifies throughout the day today, snow really picks up in Eastern SD and into Southern Minnesota near the midnight hours tonight. This snow will lift northward throughout the night tonight with moderate to heavy snow showers continuing into the morning hours tomorrow and throughout much of the day. Snow doesn’t likely completely shut off until midnight Wednesday night.

Here’s a look at our latest snowfall outlook. The highest totals will likely be in SW and South Central Minnesota where frontogenesis forcing will be the strongest:

As we work into Thursday evening a way of snow will likely begin to develop in South Central South Dakota and lead to some light snow accumulations. Another wave will re-develop Friday afternoon and into Friday night leading to more snow accumulations:

Behind this wave a strong area of low pressure will begin to push into the area late Saturday night and into Sunday. This will likely be a strong storm system that has the ability to drop heavy snow with strong winds to portions of the area:

We are favoring the track of the European model right now (see above simulated radar), but there are still a good deal of discrepancies in the data while means that further adjustments are certainly on the table as we work into the weekend. We’re still a good ways out with this system, but a high impact storm with strong winds is certainly on the table:
