Interesting pattern ahead with a little bit of everything across the country.  A storm system lifting in tonight into Wednesday brings flooding risks across the Tennessee Valley, and wintry weather across the Plains to the East coast. The pattern this week is a perfect one for winter storm threats in the central Plains and upper Midwest, with a strong clashing of air masses noted here.  This southwest flow is also bringing continuous rainfall across the Tennessee Valley with a stalled front.

A little over a week ago, it was said here that the pattern was becoming more favorable for winter storm risks in the Midwest and Ohio Valley.  However, we mentioned that if the southeast U.S. ridge trended stronger, it would push the Ohio Valley into the warmer side and pull the snow risks northwest.  Overall, that is exactly what is happening for this week.  This has been a very familiar pattern this month.  Here’s a look at current weather alerts across the Midwest.  Many winter weather advisories and some winter storm warnings:

Areas in the Ohio River Valley will see some accumulating snow tonight, on the onset of our storm system.  Warmer air will lift across the Ohio Valley Wednesday, with heaviest snows expected across Iowa into Minnesota where this will be an all snow event.

Snowfall through Wednesday will be widespread with this system across the Plains, with a large area of 5″+:

We have another storm date this weekend, with this one being much more potent.  Once again,  a storm track across the Plains into the Great Lakes.  This system will have enough dynamics to produce a severe storm threat across the Mississippi Valley, perhaps as far north as the Ohio Valley.

This storm will help kick in a change in the pattern across the eastern U.S next week.  A ridge that has been situated in the central North Pacific will finally work east over Alaska into western Canada.  Will will ultimately allow the colder air that has locked over the western states to make more dominance east.

In the meantime, check out the precipitation percent of normal over the next 7 days.  An INCREDIBLY wet pattern for the Tennessee Valley, along with an active week 1 for much of the Midwest.
