2-19-18 KS/IA/NE Update: Freezing rain a big concern into Tuesday…latest timing and amounts here! N.

Video:

Good Monday morning! Many winter weather advisories in place across the region…mostly for freezing rain which will go into effect this evening through Tuesday.  Winter storm warning for northwest Nebraska where several inches of snow is likely.

Forecast radar shows a light wintry mix this morning, then the main round of freezing rain/mixed precipitation moves in this evening, and gradually moves out Tuesday morning into the afternoon.  Purple indicates freezing rain, pink sleet, green rain, and blue is snow.  Loop goes from 6am CT this morning to 8pm CT Tuesday:

Many areas across Iowa, northwest Missouri, and eastern Kansas will see 0.1-0.2″ of icing mainly from this evening through Tuesday morning, although I wouldn’t rule out isolated locations reaching ice storm criteria of 0.25″.

Generally, the best chance to see snow accumulations will be for locations in central, western, and northern Nebraska.  Models are trying to pick up on a narrow swath of several inches across the central part of the state overnight.

Check out the temperatures from today through Tuesday as a sharp frontal boundary will be draped across the region.  Given the mild temperatures in southeast Kansas, I think the ice accumulation forecast is likely incorrect for that area.  Certainly going to be a sharp dividing line between mild and very cold air, but the cold mostly wins out.

As discussed in the video, a brief break comes later tomorrow through Wednesday before another round of some freezing rain possible by Thursday, as the pattern isn’t changing a whole lot into the weekend.  Have a great day, and let us know if you have any questions!
