Video:
Good Friday morning. Impressive amounts of rain have fallen across central and southern Indiana with most areas over 1″ of rain. Much lower totals north and west.
Rain showers will continue to impact southern portions of the state through the morning, with the rain axis gradually shifting south and should be south of the Ohio River by 1pm. Beyond that, dry conditions are expected with some sunshine working in as well.
Temperatures will continue to cool behind the cold front today and hold steady this afternoon. Temperatures will fall into the 20s tonight, teens in northern Indiana.
Dry weather tonight as high pressure scoots across the state. We should start our Saturday dry, by 10am ET a wave of precipitation looks to begin working into southwest Indiana. This initial wave will bring a mix of light rain and snow showers initially to the southern half of the state, then a more separated northern piece of energy works in from Illinois and will work to bring light precipitation across central/northern areas from mid-afternoon through mid-evening with light snow showers mixed with some rain over much of the area.
Temperatures warming above freezing across the state during the day will greatly reduce this being much of any impact, watch as temperatures drop Saturday evening/night from north to south to possibly allow for some refreezing of remaining moisture on untreated surfaces.
As we touched on in the video, we’ll watch for the possibility of some freezing fog Sunday morning. It is still a low confidence mention due to uncertainty whether or now we clear the skies out. Sunday turns into a nice day with southerly winds allowing temperatures to soar in the 40s and 50s.
We continue to target a VERY wet set-up next week. A true stream of Gulf moisture will work its way into the Ohio Valley, with a boundary stalling out over the area. Rain is basically a given Monday through Wednesday, with the heaviest rainfall targeting Tuesday night into Wednesday. Temperatures will be unseasonably warm in the 60s Monday and Tuesday, southeast locations possibly hitting lower 70s Tuesday. Colder air will move in behind this boundary as it passes Wednesday. You even notice freezing rain in western Illinois at the same time we are in the 60s…illustrating how sharp this boundary will be.
The latest data is alarming in showing a widespread 2-4″ of rain with localized higher pockets over the next week. The flood threat next week is real and we need to keep a close eye on local rivers/streams over the next few weeks as flooding will likely occur.
