2-16-18 Central Plains Forecast: Overall mild weekend followed with an active pattern next week. N.

Video:

Good Friday morning.  Rain showers continue to exit southern portion of the area, and overall expecting a nice day with sunshine building in despite much cooler air.  An unorganized disturbance will work across the area late tonight through Saturday, bringing the chance for light rain and snow showers mostly over Iowa and Missouri, as well as southeast Kansas.  Forecast radar from midnight tonight to 8pm CT Saturday:

There may be a pocket or two that gets up to 1″ in northeast Iowa, but overall accumulations of snow will be minor and limited to northeast Iowa.

Temperatures for most areas will be mild for the weekend!  Temperature loop from 6am CT Saturday to 9pm CT Sunday shown below:

Most of the area should be dry on Sunday, then we track an unsettled forecast for early next week.  A very sharp frontal boundary will progress across the area Monday-Wednesday, with this front separating warm/Gulf air from arctic air behind it.  It continues to appear that southeast Kansas and Missouri will be targeted for heavy rains.

Not only heavy rain, but the potential of some freezing rain/mixed precipitation on the backside of the precipitation, so that will be something to monitor closely next week.  Here is a look at the rainfall forecast over the next week off the latest GFS and European.  You will note the European is a bit heavier and more widespread with the heavy rains covering all of Missouri, and more of eastern Kansas.  GFS keeps the boundary a bit further southeast which places the heavier rain further south/east.  We are favoring the European model.
