2-15-19 Northern Plains: Persistent snowfall throughout the weekend in South Dakota. Latest snowfall totals here. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Friday morning everyone! Snow is ongoing in portions of Western and South-Central South Dakota this morning in what is the first wave of accumulating snow for portions of the area. There will be a small break in SW SD later this afternoon which expands into the overnight hours, but snow re-emerges from the southwest in the pre-dawn hours tomorrow and generally sticks around for all of Saturday and Sunday. Here’s a look at the current radar:

Wind Chill Warnings/Advisories and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of the area:

Snow will begin to weaken and lift north later today, but will re-develop in SW SD overnight and expand eastward tomorrow. Snow will generally continue throughout tomorrow and throughout all of Sunday:

Snow will be most consistent and heaviest in NW SD and into far SW ND. Some low-level frontogenesis will aid in a band of 9-12″ of total accumulation by Sunday night with the risk of isolated higher totals from Bowman, Rapid City, Dupree and Pierre.

Biggest risk to the forecast will be into Sunday as snow works towards southern Minnesota. Dry air will be pushing down from the North in Minnesota so we’ve gone on the lower side for the Minneapolis area and points south. This area has the lowest confidence given the dry air to the north which could cut down totals, but if the storm shifts north, totals can easily be higher. Here’s a look at low-level humidity on Sunday displaying the gradient:

There could be some freezing fog in NE ND and into Northern Minnesota overnight tonight.
