2-15-18 Central Plains Forecast: Big ups/downs in temps through next week…heavy rain threat for Missouri. N.

Video:

Good Thursday morning!  Overall a cloudy day ahead for the region with temperatures generally above normal.  Precipitation will be limited to a few showers mixing with snow showers this evening into tonight, with the most likely area of precipitation to develop across the southern half of Missouri as we head into this evening and overnight:

Really not expecting any accumulating snow for the region… I will mention that far northern Nebraska may get clipped with light accumulating snow from South Dakota, where a coating of snow is possible from Valentine to Chadron.  The model is also trying to pick up on a possible light dusting in southern Iowa.  Low confidence on this, and probably doesn’t cause any issues.

As we have said all week, most of the area sees little to no measurable precipitation.  The exception is southeast Missouri where 0.2″-0.5″ of rain may fall.

High pressure builds in for Friday with colder air but some sunshine returning.  A couple disturbances will bring the chance for light precipitation late Friday night into the day Saturday for the eastern portions of the region…showers in southern Missouri, and a few snow showers across Iowa.  Not going to be a huge deal.

Northeast Iowa has the best chance to see very light snow accumulations Saturday:

Most of the weekend will feature mild temperatures, then a very strong boundary will slowly move across the region early next week.  The video discusses the details regarding temperature trends and the possibility for wintry weather in parts of the area.  One thing for sure, southeast portions of Missouri look very wet over the next week.  Check out the 10-day precipitation off the European ensemble:
