Today’s Video:
Good Thursday morning everyone! We have an arctic front moving eastward across the area leading to a quick hitting line of snow showers that will drop some light accumulations of generally less than 1″ before the line completely pushes east of Minnesota this evening:
Skies will clear out in the Dakotas and into the overnight hours leading to some sunshine and some very cold temperature tomorrow morning:
As we work through the overnight hours snow will build in SW South Dakota and expand into the morning hours. Aided by some weak frontogenesis, a band of 4-6″, isolated 7″ is possible by Saturday morning through the Rapid City area. Here’s a look at the simulated radar with this system:
The next storm system will be right on the heels of this wave and will move in Saturday morning into mid-day Saturday. This wave has more upper-level support from the Jet Stream and favorable forcing for upward motion which could allow for this second wave to be more robust and widespread than the first. Here’s a look at the simulated radar with this system. Note, there are still a good amount of discrepancies in the data for this system with the European shifting back and forth between a north solution and south solution. As of now we favor a track closer to the GFS given its consistency but low confidence right now.
Here are the snowfall ideas from the GFS/European:
