Wanted to recap how we are doing snowfall-wise this winter season to date & compared to normal. Generally, Illinois has seen a very snowy season, while Indiana and Ohio are falling a good bit behind.
Here’s a look at the snowfall over the past 24 hours….areas across Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan saw another heavy snow event. This map actually only goes through 7am this morning, not taking into account the additional snows that are still falling.
Significant freezing was observed across northern Indiana/Illinois/Ohio and southern Michigan, where an ice storm was observed. Check out these ice/snow reports over the past 24 hours:
This storm continues to bring backside snow showers and strong winds across the Great Lakes this evening. Radar at 7:30 Tuesday evening:
I know what you’re thinking…..let’s move on! We have an active pattern continuing. The difference heading into the weekend will be colder air filtering further south, as several waves continue to move through the central U.S. This means areas that have missed out on the snows lately have a chance to see some! The first wave looks to come Friday into Saturday tracking from the central Plains to the Ohio Valley.
Another round of snow moves across the central Plains into parts of the Ohio Valley late Saturday through Sunday:
If that isn’t enough, there are signals for a stronger storm toward mid next week. Obviously the track and strength WILL change as we get closer.
As you can see, several chances to get some snow across the Ohio Valley over the next 5-10 days. The synoptic set-up next week features a cold trough across the Plains and western states, with a continued southeast ridge to bring in the needed thermal gradient for storm systems. That is a great recipe for winter weather. For impacts at your location, it’s all about BALANCE between the warmer air to our southeast, and the colder air northwest. You need this gradient to get big winter storms. If that southeast ridge expands, you shift your storm track northward again. We keep it flat and weaker, this allows the storms to tug further south. The idea here is for a set-up favoring more of the Ohio Valley into next week for winter weather threats. This does not guarantee snow for every location here, so don’t respond in a week if you missed out on the snow saying we were wrong. Think of the general picture. 🙂
