Video: Didn’t show freezing rain totals in the video, but I have posted that in the discussion below. Other-wise, most of the details will be found in the video here.
Rain showers gradually build northward through the day, with northern parts of the state mostly just seeing patchy fog/patchy freezing drizzle. Tonight will bring widespread precipitation, with an icing concern for northern/northeast Indiana, especially along and north of a Rensselaer to Wabash line. Highest impact likely across northeast Indiana where sub-freezing temperatures linger the longest, until near sunrise Tuesday. Forecast radar from this afternoon to Tuesday morning shown below:
Freezing rain could add up to 0.1″ to 0.25′ in far northern and northeast Indiana. Exact temperatures will determine impacts, but data showing these areas lingering 30-31 most of the night, with the risks ending from south to north late tonight through sunrise Tuesday. Ignore the ice totals in Central Indiana. That is what the model thinks is falling now, but temperatures here in reality are slightly above freezing.
Backside snow showers will build in mid to late afternoon Tuesday, and linger into Wednesday morning. These will be most numerous over the northern half of the state. Light accumulations are possible. There is some uncertainty in Central Indiana. Right now we are thinking 1″ or less, but a couple hi-res models suggest locally heavier bands on the backside. (The reason the snow time-line begins for today is for the snow tonight in Illinois).
Total precipitation through Tuesday night: Most data showing around 1″ in the Indy metro. Highest amounts south and east, lower north/west.
Watch today’s video for more our next system showing up late week, and what appears to be an increasing potential for wintry weather heading into the second half of the month.
