Video:
Good Thursday morning! Despite a mild start this morning, an arctic front will move across the region today leading to falling temperatures this afternoon. A wave of showers will move across the southern half of the region today, mixing and changing to snow on the backside this afternoon and early evening. Guidance shows this transition taking place 4pm to 9pm, ending north to south.
Watch southern portions of the area to see potential for moisture on roadways to freeze this evening/overnight as temperatures quickly drop below freezing.
Here is a look at temperatures from 7am to 9pm. Expect falling temperatures from northwest to southeast throughout the day.
As we head into the weekend, we still look for snow chances and light accumulation potential. As warmer air builds in Saturday, areas of light snow will be possible mainly during the afternoon. The main time-frame for snow across the region looks to develop overnight Saturday through Sunday, mixing with rain on Sunday. Temperatures Saturday night through most of Sunday are looking marginal which will certainly help as far as impacts on roadways. Both days this weekend will see highs above freezing. We will watch for an arctic front to move through Sunday evening which will send a drop in temperatures well below freezing. With the potential for light snow to linger Sunday night, this could be the time-frame of the biggest impact to roadways. We will keep you updated over the next couple days as we try to fine-tune the specifics.
Here is an animation of forecast temperatures from Saturday 7am to 1am Monday:
We discuss in the video another storm system showing up from late Monday into Wednesday. The model trends have been for a stronger storm during this time, with new data showing ample amounts of moisture (below). Where we see wintry precipitation out of this next system it could be significant, but we note the models will likely show big fluctuations in the intensity of next week’s system given it is 5 days out and models have been very inconsistent from run to run. Something to keep an eye on!
