Good morning everyone! The low pressure system that has been slowly meandering eastward yesterday into this morning continues to bring wrap-around snow showers to portions of northern KS with some mixing rain and snow showers in northeastern MO as of 9:50am CST. We’ll continue to find these snow shower risks linger well throughout the day and even into tonight and Monday, though will be substantially weaker heading into Monday. Additional light snow accumulations will be possible that will lead to slick spots.
Winter Weather Advisories have been allowed to cancel in northwestern KS but we continue to have advisories further east across far north-central KS in effect through 7pm EST this evening. Winds will be gusty upwards of 30mph at times through the morning before slowly subsiding this afternoon, which will lead to blowing snow as well. There are also Winter Weather Advisories north of St. Joseph which are also in effect through 7pm EST this evening.
Simulated radar through 9pm CST this evening: This system will be slow-moving, so light snow shower risks will remain through the afternoon and evening hours in northern KS with light rain showers in northern MO gradually transitioning to snow showers late this afternoon into the evening. The system will be slowly pulling eastward, which will allow for the snows to drift further south than their current locations.
Simulated radar from 9pm CST this evening through 6pm CST Tuesday: Light snows will continue across north-central/northeastern KS into northern MO during the nighttime hours with the bulk of the activity shifting east out of KS by 6am CST Monday. Light snows will linger in northern MO through the morning hours before once again the bulk of the snows pull east into IL around 12pm CST Monday. However, with the upper-level low remaining in place off to the north and east, this will squeeze out any additional moisture and continue light, scattered snow shower chances in northeastern KS into northern MO during the day Monday. Scattered snow showers will remain possible in northeastern KS into the state of MO Monday night before gradually declining in coverage Tuesday.
Temperatures during the day today will remain rather marginal with slick spots remaining likely in far northern KS. However, as we progress into the evening and especially tonight, colder air will funnel in behind the system into KS and MO. Temperatures will likely fall below freezing for most which will allow for any residual water on pavement to re-freeze, which will add to slick spot risks.
Additional snowfall through Monday morning: The snows will continue to gradually lose coverage and intensity going through the nighttime hours into Monday morning. Regardless, an additional 1-2″+ is a good bet across far northeastern KS (north of Manhattan and Topeka) and far northwestern MO with generally less than 1″ stretching from northeast of Colby towards Kansas City to Quincy and northward. Additional light snow accumulations of up to 0.5″ will be possible the remainder of Monday into Tuesday.
Total precipitation through through the next 7 days: We are still looking at liquid equivalence of 0.1-0.4″ in northeastern KS into northern MO as this system works out. Light snow chances will remain through Tuesday but will overall be quieter through Thursday with a possible weak system pushing through. A potential snowmaker is in the cards Friday into Saturday across KS and MO but more details will need to be ironed out before confidence can grow. Regardless, the storm system Friday into Saturday definitely is worth monitoring.
High temperatures over the next four days: Highs in northern KS/MO will stay well into the 30s with 40s likely further south. Progressing into Monday, many will struggle to climb above freezing in KS and northwestern MO.
Low temperatures over the next four mornings: Lows are expected to fall into the 20s in KS and in the lower 30s for much of MO tonight. Following this storm system Tuesday morning, temperatures will likely dip into the teens in far northern KS with 20s more likely elsewhere.
Wind forecast over the next four days: Winds will remain on the gusty side through the remainder of the morning with wind gusts approaching 30mph at times. However, as we head through the evening hours, winds will gradually start to subside with many gusts at 20mph or lower by this evening.
High/low temperatures over the next 10 days for Columbia, Kansas City, Wichita and Dodge City:
