12-17-18 IN/IL/OH Forecast: Drier trends expected through Wednesday before the next system works into the region starting early Thursday. I.

Today’s video:

Good morning everyone! Late last work week into the early half of the weekend saw many areas get impacted by moderate (and even heavy) rains at times associated with an upper-level low that slowly meandered eastward south of the area. Shown below is radar estimated precipitation over the last 72 hours. A widespread 1-3″ rain fell south of the I-70 corridor in IN and IL with localized pockets picking up 3″+, especially south of Terre Haute, IN. The southern two-thirds of OH saw lower rainfall totals but still received a general 0.5-2″ of rain. Areas off to the northwest in northern IL and northwestern IL saw very little rainfall in which most rain fell Thursday.

The next few days (through Wednesday) will be quiet across the area with no precipitation risks to be found. A mix of sun and clouds is expected through this duration. While expected to be an isolated threat, tonight into Tuesday morning will feature another potential round of patchy freezing fog, this time in central IN into southwestern OH. Temperatures will once again fall below freezing during this time, so a few slick spots will be possible on untreated pavement in areas that develop this patchy fog. Winds will be variable with high pressure remaining, which does support patchy fog development. Overall, it is not expected to be widespread but something to note heading into tonight.

Our next storm system won’t begin to impact the region until early Thursday morning in the form of rain showers. Areas of showers will progress southwest to northeast Thursday and especially Thursday night into Friday when we work in the bulk of the precipitation. Based on current consensus, IL will start to clear this system early Friday afternoon with some possible light snow mixing in on the backside as the rains shift west to east across IN and OH late Friday into Saturday morning. However, how much mixing on the backside will depend on how much cold air aloft can work into the region.

Total precipitation over the next 7 days: The precipitation shown below won’t come until late work week. Current consensus keeps the precipitation generally on the lighter side across IL and western IN with precipitation amounts picking up further east into eastern IN and especially OH. Some areas could see ~1″ of liquid before this upcoming system works out of the area early Saturday.

High temperatures over the next four days: Cooler air has ushered in from the north, so daytime highs today will stay below 40ºF north and into the 40s south. Come Wednesday, milder air will filter back into the region as temperatures will climb into the 50s in southern IL and the southern third of IN while 40s will be more common to the north.

Low temperatures over the next four mornings: Temperatures have fallen this morning but will be even cooler come Tuesday morning with the vast majority dipping well into the 20s. More mild mornings will follow into Thursday and Friday morning ahead of the next storm system with temperatures only dropping into the 40s in some locations, especially IL and IN Thursday morning.

Wind forecast over the next four days: An overall calm wind pattern will be prevalent through Wednesday. However, there will be some breezier conditions today, mainly in OH that could lead to gusts upwards of 25mph. Sustained winds will increase heading into Thursday for western locations as we work in our next storm system.

High/low temperatures over the next 10 days for Columbus (OH), Indianapolis, Springfield and Davenport: Our more mild pattern will linger through the work week.
