Today’s Video:
Good Thursday morning everyone! We have some light snow showers working across South Dakota this morning. These could put down a quick dusting or a very isolated 0.5″ in pockets, but do not look to cause widespread accumulations.
The main story today will be snow showers and squalls that develop for most of the area this afternoon and evening. A strong upper-level low will combine with enough instability to produce scattered snow squalls for much of the area. Some of these quick hitting bursts of snow can quickly produce light snow accumulations and low visibilities with strong wind gusts. We’ll also see light snow develop in Southern/SE Minnesota that could produce up to 0.5″ of snow beginning late this afternoon and early tonight. Many areas will be able to pick up a dusting of snow, but a few pockets of o.5 – 2″ of snow cannot be ruled out with these snow squalls, especially in the area outlined below and associated with the upper-level low later this evening and the early overnight hours in Northern Minnesota:
The area of snow squalls in SW ND and into Central ND will become a more defined area of quick-hitting moderate snowfall tonight. This will likely produce a very narrow band of 1-3″ of snowfall. This is the area we are favoring for this wave right now, but the band of accumulation will likely be only a county or two wide, so a small shift will greatly impact who sees snow.
More scattered snow showers will likely continue especially in the Northern half of Minnesota overnight, but dynamics are favorable for the re-development of some heavier and more widespread snow squalls tomorrow afternoon in Eastern Minnesota with similar quick hitting bursts of snow that could produce 1-2″ in the heaviest isolated bursts, with lighter showers dropping a dusting. As we work into Saturday morning, we’ll see another wave of light snow start to work into Minnesota. A bit of discrepancy with the exact track with the Euro/NAM keeping most of the snow in North Dakota and Northern Minnesota while the GFS takes the system further south in NE SD. Favoring the Euro right now given the strong high pressure system to the south.
Cold temperatures will persist throughout the next week, with record cold high temperatures possible tomorrow:
