11-7-18 Northern Plains: Quieter weather today… snow showers and squalls likely tomorrow. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Wednesday morning! The snow that put down accumulating snow in portions of North Dakota and Minnesota yesterday and last night is mostly out of the area, with some lingering light snow showers and flurries in NE Minnesota. These continue to diminish into mid-day today and likely don’t add much more accumulation other than some patchy dustings of snow:

We will have a very weak wave working into Western South Dakota later this evening that will work ESE across South Dakota overnight. Overall, some areas could pick up a dusting or a very isolated 0.5″, but this does not look to be a big snowmaker.

The better chances of snow will come as a strong upper-level low pushes southeast into the area and produce widespread snow showers and squalls especially picking up tomorrow afternoon. The snow squall parameter and energy support the most widespread snow squall risks to be in the area I have outlined below:

Everyone will have a chance of snow tomorrow, but the area circled above is most likely to see more numerous snow showers. Most will see at least some light snow, but many only see a dusting or less or accumulation, and some in those heavier snow squalls could see a quick 1 – 3″. Especially in the Western Dakotas, some of these snow squalls could have wind gusts of 20 – 30 MPH.

These snow showers likely become a more defined area of snow as we work into Thursday night and Friday morning with a narrow band of 1 – 2″ (iso. higher) of snow in Eastern SD and SW Minnesota. We’ll also see wrap around snow showers Thursday night and especially Friday in NE and Northern Minnesota which could put down another inch or two of snow in spots. Here’s a look at the simulated radar from Thursday night into Saturday morning. Note, the snowfall accumulations below are rough ideas of these two areas of snow (24 hour totals).

We’ll likely see another wave of snow Saturday and Sunday with more snowfall accumulation likely, favoring North Dakota and Northern Minnesota similar to the Euro solution as of now:
