Today’s Video:
Good Friday morning! We’re seeing risks for freezing mist/drizzle throughout the day today with some very scattered light rain/freezing rain possible surging from the southwest throughout the day. Here’s a look at the current radar and area to watch for freezing mist/drizzle/fog throughout the day today:
We could also see some mist/fog issues into tonight. Here’s a look at the visibility by 11 PM tonight (note the model may be a tad overdone with the fog and depicting mist/drizzle as fog):
The potent winter storm really begins to ramp up as we work into late this evening/overnight with a mix of rain/freezing rain possible as early as 9/10 PM in South Central SD. We’ll see changeover to snow from west to east throughout the night with most of Central/Western SD and W. ND seeing snow by tomorrow morning. The changeover for SE SD and S. Minnesota will take a bit longer as those areas see the changeover early tomorrow afternoon. However, a very heavy band will setup in SE SD and S. Minnesota tomorrow afternoon and evening related to an area of frontogensis. Combined with wind gusts of 30-35+ MPH, blizzard like conditions are possible especially tomorrow afternoon and night. Here’s a look at the simulated radar from now into Sunday evening:
South-Central SD will see the longest duration of snow leading to the highest amounts, but the band from SE SD into Sioux Falls and Rochester on Saturday afternoon will be very heavy with snowfall rates more than 1″/hour. If anywhere can overachieve in our forecast it would be the southern 1-2 rows of counties in Minnesota.
Here’s a look at our updated snowfall forecast throughout the duration of this event. Note, the gradient in Eastern SD could be very strong with a short distance between nearly a foot of snow and less than 1″ creating lower confidence in that area:
Wind gusts will be between 30-35 MPH on Saturday in E. SD and S. MN. Here’s a look at the winds throughout Saturday and Sunday:
Temperatures will linger around freezing throughout this event leading to a very wet snow and additional issues for power lines and trees:
Here’s a look at the winds over the next 4 days:
Here’s a look at city charts for Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, Fargo and Pierre:
