11-29-18 Northern Plains: Tracking high-impact winter storm this weekend. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Thursday morning everyone. We have snow showers continuing in NE Minnesota this morning that will lead to additional light accumulating snowfall of 2-4″ isolated 5″. Some re-development is possible in North-Central Minnesota this afternoon and those should push east and lead to a quick band of accumulating snow this afternoon and into the evening:

Here’s a look at the radar now into 11 PM CST. Note, we will also have issues with light freezing rain and drizzle southwest of this system especially in Western and Central Minnesota with some lingering flurries in Northern Minnesota throughout the day.

Here’s a look at additional snowfall for NE Minnesota:

Low-level saturation throughout the day and temperatures near or below freezing will lead to risks for patchy freezing drizzle/mist. This risk includes most of Minnesota and the Eastern Dakotas. Here’s a look at the low-level relative humidity (closer to saturation in purple colors) and temperatures this afternoon:

We could see some patchy freezing fog tonight and freezing drizzle overnight tonight especially in the areas shaded in black below:

For the strong weekend system we have winter storm watches already in effect:

We should start to work in this storm system Friday night and it will stall out over the area and lead to persistent snowfall throughout the day on Saturday and into Sunday. This slow moving system will allow for some very heavy snow in portions of the area – mainly south-central SD and into Southern Minnesota. Here’s a look at the radar from Friday evening to Sunday evening:

Here’s a look at our latest risk map for this system and the latest snowfall forecasts from the GEFS/EPS:

As mentioned above, we could have wind gusts of 30+ MPH throughout much of Saturday and into Sunday allowing for Blizzard like conditions at times. This will be a high impact, heavy wet snow that combined with wind will lead to conditions that can produce power outages and major travel issues especially as temperatures crash behind the system on Sunday. Here’s a look at temperatures over the next 4 days:
