This afternoon’s video:
Good Tuesday afternoon everyone!
We’re carefully watching an upper-level low that will track through the Ohio Valley late tomorrow and into Thursday. This will likely produce a swath of accumulating snow – and some freezing rain risks.
Precipitation starts to work in from the south initially as rain in Southern Indiana/Illinois tomorrow evening. After dark, much of this rain changes over to snow on the north/northwest side of the low putting S. Illinois and W. Indiana in a favorable spot for snow risks. We’ll likely also have a period of freezing rain in Southern and Eastern Indiana Wednesday night into Thursday morning:
Here’s a look at the areas that have the highest risks for wet accumulating snowfall through Thursday. The best risks look to be as the low surges north leading to a longer period of moderate to even heavy snowfall at times in Southern Illinois. As the low transfers to the east coast and a dry slot moves northeast, precipitation probably weakens leading to lesser snow risks east. Of course, a small shift in track could greatly impact snow totals – with a slight west trend today. Lowest confidence right now is in the southeastern fourth of Indiana where temperatures will favor a mix of rain, snow and freezing rain:
Here’s a general idea of the areas that have the greatest risk of light freezing rain accumulations from the GFS:
However, temperatures will be warming as the low pushes north especially in Indiana and Ohio, which could help keep roads mostly wet and melt ice accumulation during the day on Thursday. Here’s a look at temperatures from 7PM Wednesday to 7PM Thursday:
