Good evening everyone! This will be a quick update regarding rain chances through the day Friday. The storm system that brought rains over the last couple of days is finally starting to exit the region with the only shower activity remaining being located in eastern MO as of 5:20pm CDT. A weaker shortwave trough impacting the Northern Plains is beginning to swing down into the northern portions of NE where some light showers and even a couple elevated storms are located currently. To summarize, we’ll watch the rains exit MO this evening while the shower activity in northern NE dives further southeast.
Simulated radar through 7am CDT Friday: The pesky showers in eastern MO gradually lift out of the state by 9pm CDT this evening while showers and elevated isolated storms trek southeastward across portions of NE into the nighttime hours. As the night progresses, the instability aiding the elevated storms in north-central/northwestern NE will slowly diminish, allowing for the storms to weaken. However, scattered shower activity will continue to work southeastward impacting portions of eastern KS in the process. Most of the activity will be focused in IA and MO by 7am CDT Friday with a few lingering patches of light showers and drizzle possible in eastern NE/KS.
We’ll need to watch for a few pockets of dense fog Friday morning (depicted in darker shading), mainly in the eastern portions of the region near the Mississippi River. Recent rains leading to low-level moisture will help with the development of some patchy fog in these areas. Any fog in the region Friday morning should erode as the morning progresses, with most fog dissipated by the lunch hour.
Simulated radar from 7am-7pm CDT Friday: The scattered wave of showers progresses further southeast across MO with a few lingering showers possible in IA. A few isolated storms may develop in eastern MO Friday afternoon before exiting Friday evening. Areas off to the west are expected to be drier, but this will likely be short-lived as we anticipate the next disturbance from the Northern Plains to drop southeastward and impact portions of the region Friday night through Saturday night.
Here’s a look at total precipitation through 7pm CDT Friday: This model is slightly underdone in northwestern NE given the elevated showers and storms working through the area currently, but overall we expect pockets of 0.1-0.5″ of rain in IA, MO and northern NE. Localized rainfall amounts of 0.5-1″ are possible, mainly in east-central MO given the ongoing rains and additional rain chances into Friday afternoon.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out! Have a great evening!
