Good morning everyone! Taking a quick look at temperatures this morning (as of 7:40am CDT), many across IA and MO are below freezing with widespread 20/lower 30 degree readings. Freeze Warnings are in effect across the southern half of MO (excluding the Boot Heel) where these locations are experience their first freeze of the season! With the sun beginning to rise, temperatures will increase and the Freeze Warnings will be allowed to expire in the next few hours.
The beautiful weekend continues across the region as high pressure sits overhead. The upper-level low that plagued IA with areas of clouds has since cleared out. Sunny skies will prevail across the majority of MO, IA and northern NE. There will be some very weak energy lifting out of the Rockies into KS and southwestern NE this afternoon and evening that will lead to areas of scattered clouds, but precipitation is not expected. If you have any outdoor plans or are traveling, today will be another good day to complete these tasks.
There is a patchy fog risk Monday morning in southeastern NE, northern KS, far northwestern MO and into IA as light winds, high pressure and clear nighttime skies could lead to the fog development. An inversion above the surface will not allow for a thorough mixing of the surface layer, which would lead to the development of fog. Any areas of fog present in the region Monday morning will erode as the sun rises, with most fog dissipating by late morning.
We are looking at another fantastic day weather-wise ahead of us Monday with a continued lack of energy and moisture. There will be a cold front progressing through the region but with so much dry air in the atmosphere, it will be hard to get any clouds to precipitate. So rain chances remain very low across the area. Cloud coverage at this time appears to be disorganized as a mix of sun and clouds is most likely. There is the potential for increased cloud coverage in southwestern KS with clouds streaming in from the Rockies and Southern Plains.
Here’s a look at total precipitation over the next 7 days: Most of this won’t impact the region until mid to late work week. Current model consensus brings rains to areas such as NE and KS, but then slowly fades in coverage as it works through IA and MO. In general, 0.25-0.75″ of rain is on tap across portions of KS, NE and western IA.
We’ll introduce wetter risks to central/western KS and southern NE later this week where above normal precipitation is likely through the next 7 days. However, off to the east and northwest, a continued lack of sufficient moisture and rains will result in below normal precipitation (less than 50% of normal).
High temperatures over the next four days: Southerly flow will allow for warmer air to build back into NE and KS today with most of the region feeling the warmth return into Monday. However, temperatures will fall again Tuesday with many in IA struggling to make it past 50.
Low temperatures over the next four mornings: Slightly warmer overnight lows in the 30s and 40s are expected Monday morning compared to this morning. Temperatures could drop close to freezing in the Boot Heel of MO. Another upper-level low swinging through the Great Lakes Tuesday will allow for temperatures to drop once again across the eastern portions of the region Wednesday morning. Lows below freezing are expected in IA.
Wind forecast over the next four days: Today will definitely be not as windy as yesterday across IA, but gusts upwards of 25 mph will be likely ahead of a dry cold front in the central portions of the region. Winds will pick up in the High Plains beginning Tuesday.
High/low temperatures over the next 10 days:
