Good afternoon everyone! This will be a quick update regarding light rains in southeastern MO and frost/freeze risks expected further northwest into Tuesday morning. Most rains at this point in time are south and east of the state but we will continue to see very light rains clip the far southeastern portions of MO, especially the Boot Heel, through the evening hours. However, most of this activity will continue to fade as the evening progresses. Areas of cloud cover will linger in these parts through the nighttime hours, likely keeping temperatures slightly warmer than areas to the northwest. The vast majority of the region will remain rain-free tonight, but with the very light rains around the Boot Heel, these locations will receive up to 0.05″ of rain at best.
Widespread frost/freeze risks will be prevalent late tonight into Tuesday morning with Freeze Warnings (second image) in effect for locations north of the I-44 corridor where the coldest air will reside and more substantial clearing is likely. Temperatures (first image) in the freeze warned areas will range from the upper 20s to the lower 30s by the time of sunrise Tuesday morning. To the south of this region (excluding locations in far southern MO and the Boot Heel), Frost Advisories are in effect where temperatures will likely remain just above freezing in the mid 30s.
During the day Tuesday, areas of high-level clouds will likely remain over the southern portions of the state while drier air will likely lead to little cloud cover and plentiful sunshine over northern locations. The high-level clouds in southern MO will drop some very light rains, especially areas further south, but with drier air in the low-mid levels, most precipitation that falls from these clouds is expected to evaporate before it reaches the surface (known as a virga). A few sprinkles are possible in the Boot Heel where greater moisture might be able to overcome the dry air.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out! Have a great evening!
