1-6-18 Southern INDOT Sat Evening Update: Freezing rain Sunday night. Latest info on timing and impacts here! N.

Synopsis: Good Saturday evening!  We continue to monitor our freezing rain set-up for Sunday night.  We still think freezing rain and ice accumulation will be the biggest concern for all of southern Indiana.  It is looking more possible that northern sections of the will see a mix or switch to wet snow towards the end of the event.

FORECAST RADAR: Initial waves of moisture possible 4-10pm, but the main wave of moisture builds in after 10pm EST Sunday.  Forecast soundings continue to favor more of a freezing rain scenario for much of the area during the overnight.  There has been a slightly colder trend aloft for northern parts of the area during the back portion of the event 3-7am Monday, where it’s possible to see a mix/changeover to wet snow over northern portions of the Seymour district.

Temperature Loop 10AM Sunday to 1PM MONDAY: Not only are temperatures aloft critical, but surface temperatures will be important.  Don’t be surprised see late day temperatures go above freezing in at least southern portions of the area.  As the precipitation builds in Sunday night, temperatures get knocked back down and icing will be likely.  All of southern Indiana is included in this risk.  If I were to highlight my greatest concern (based on where the surface temperatures stay a bit colder longer) would be across south central and southeast Indiana.

Latest Forecast: We circled the area from Bloomington to Columbus northward where we think an ice to snow deal is looking more possible.  Up to 0.15″ of icing is on the table in this area before a transition to some snow.  Further south, we still think  mainly a freezing rain event with 0.05″-0.15″ of ice accumulation.
