1-5-18 Illinois Forecast: Watching a wintry mess for Sunday! N.

Video:

Flurries may linger across southern Illinois this morning, otherwise mostly sunny and continued very cold through Saturday as an arctic high builds in.  As this high moves east, southerly flow will bring in warmer air for Sunday, along with some moisture from the Gulf.  This could lead to freezing rain concerns for portions of the state Sunday and Sunday night.  Check out the NAM future radar from Sunday 9AM CST to Monday 9 AM CST.  The pink represents freezing rain.

I have drawn up a map just circling the area that I believe has the best chance of freezing rain Sunday.  North of there, it appears to be more of a snow/sleet deal ~1-2″, but some freezing rain cannot be ruled out.  Be sure to check back over the next couple of days as we fine-tune this forecast.

Milder temperatures are ahead for next week, with a storm system expected to move through around next Thursday, bringing a rain chance.  This will be followed by colder air late week and the possibility of some wintry precipitation next Friday.
