It has been an incredible past 72 hours of frigid weather across the Midwest.  Nearly every city recorded a new record low temperature for the date yesterday and again this morning, with several cities (including Rockford and Moline, IL) setting a new all-time lowest temperatures in history in the record books!  All the blue dots on the map below represent where new record lows were set, and the black dots are where all-time record lows were set.

Here is what wind chills were like during some of our most extreme hours Wednesday morning.  Stations across the upper Midwest recorded -50 to -60 wind chills, but there were isolated spots close to a -70º wind chill in North Dakota and Minnesota. Mind-blowing!!

Where did this air come from?  Straight from Santa’s headquarters!

Looking back at observations for Indianapolis, our wind chill got down to -39º between 8:20-8:25AM yesterday!

It’s amazing how Mother Nature balances things out over time.  The month started with unseasonably warm temperatures.  The past few days have balanced the temperature out to “normal”, but we’ll actually end the month BELOW normal for Indy!  Here is a look at temperature anomalies observed each day this month.  As a reference, on a January day the average temperature is 29º averaging the normal low and high together.

Here is how the month is fairing across the country regarding temperatures from normal.  Looking at this, you would never guess the month started so warm and ended with historic cold.  Hey, that’s how “averages” are made over time.

Down and up we go!  Watch the extreme, record cold air mass quickly get replaced by a much warmer than normal one through the weekend:

Before we get to the warmth, a “Saskatchewan Screamer” (fancy name for a clipper system originating out of Saskatchewan) is bringing snow across portions of Iowa and Illinois thus afternoon, and this will bring several inches of snow to portions of Indiana and Ohio overnight.

Several systems will move through early next week, with a much colder pattern returning by the second half of the week.  That’s certainly an “interesting” look late next week with a frontal boundary sagging southward, with storm systems continuing to ride along it….winter weather lovers know that can make things interesting in the Ohio Valley for wintry risks.  Doesn’t mean it will happen but such a pattern needs watched!
