1-31-18 Indiana Update: Watching weekend snow chances and a busy pattern next week! N.

Video (5:55):

Good Wednesday morning!  Plan on a much milder and windy day across the state, as temperatures warm from the mid 40s to lower 50s this afternoon.  Southwest winds could gust 35-40 mph from mid morning to mid afternoon.  A cold front will move across the state tonight through Thursday, with a threat for light precipitation.  Initially, a band of light rain looks to develop across northern Indiana after 4pm continuing into tonight, drifting into north-central Indiana overnight.  This will likely mix with some snow.  The cold front will sweep through Thursday with additional rain and snow showers developing along the front across southern Indiana.  Given the current trends, it’s possible many areas of central Indiana get skipped of any precipitation, while southern Indiana has the best chance to see a brief rain mix to snow Thursday afternoon.

Check out the temperature trends from 1pm Wednesday to 7am Friday (images are in 3-hour increments).  Notice with this front that the moisture is situated ahead of the colder air, so this will limit concerns for impact.  If we see precipitation try to hang on a bit linger near the Ohio River that could create concern for minor slick spots as temperatures fall Thursday evening, but low confidence on that.

As an arctic air mass builds in Thursday night, this will kick up lake-effect snow across northeast Indiana.  We also think there could be pockets of flurries or very light snow showers across the rest of the state.

Latest hi-re data shows areas from La porte to Fort Wayne and northward have the highest chance to see lake-effect snow accumulations.

Snow chances are in the forecast both days this weekend, with light accumulating snow looking more likely.  At this time, it appears the first wave arrives Saturday afternoon/night with snow showers, with another wave on Sunday leading to continued chances for snow this weekend.  We will have to pin down amounts as we get closer due to uncertainty in the amount of moisture and our temperature profiles.  1-3″ event for much of the state looks very possible from this distance.

The weekend kicks off a busy period ahead!  We look to catch a break Monday before our next clipper moves in Monday night/Tuesday.  Nearly every day next week offers up a chance for snow as multiple disturbances look to move across the state.
