1-31-18 Central Plains Forecast: Arctic air returns for Thursday….watching several snow chances this weekend through next week! N.

Video (5:50):

Good Wednesday morning!  Temperatures will run above normal for one more day before arctic air returns tomorrow!  Spotty areas of rain will be possible across Nebraska and Iowa this afternoon, mixing with snow tonight.  Not really expecting more than a dusting in spots.  We will also be watching for an enhanced band of precipitation over extreme southwest Nebraska and northwest Kansas late tonight through late morning Thursday:

Latest European is a bit more amped up with snow totals in southwest Nebraska.  Notice it will be confined to a rather narrow band, and many areas won’t be impacted.

Temperatures will remain above normal today, then very cold air filters in Thursday!  Here is an animation of temperatures from noon today to 6pm CT Friday:

Light snow and rain expected on Saturday, then mostly snow Sunday as reinforcing cold builds in.

Guidance has trended somewhat lower on amounts since yesterday, but still indicates many areas will have the risk for snow through the weekend:

Watching multiple systems that will move across the region next week.  These won’t have a lot of moisture with them, but over time the snow could really pile up over the northeast portions of the region across Iowa where temperatures consistently stay colder.  Models are likely overdone on amounts, but note how they both target heavy amounts in Iowa accumulating over the next 10 days.
