1-28-19 Indiana: Accum snow continues north this AM…discussing extreme cold mid-week + late week wintry risks. N.

Indiana Video:

Good morning!  A storm system is bringing light to moderate snowfall across northern Indiana this morning, with light flurries and drizzle across Central Indiana.  Through the morning, bands of moderate snowfall will continue in northern Indiana, with a brief period of freezing rain possible in west/northwest Central Indiana (a few slick spots where untreated possible) before mixing with more rain closer to late morning and warming temps.  The cold front will pass through from late afternoon through the evening with rain switching to a brief burst of snow showers, then general scattered flurries will linger overnight as temperatures crash.  Forecast radar from 5am to 9pm ET shown below:

Flurries will continue to fly into the overnight, gradually diminishing after midnight. Cannot fully rule out a few slick spots with a few flurries hanging around central and northern Indiana but the gusty winds should help dry things up a bit:

Here is our thinking regarding snowfall *total* accumulation (not additional) for this event…favoring the northern ~2 county rows of Indiana for the potential at 2-4″+, cutting off fairly sharp heading further south as warmer air working in reduces the accumulating snowfall threat. Incredible total snowfall event for most of southern Michigan with most locations seeing the potential for 8-12″+ the further north you go near Grand Rapids, Lansing to Detroit:

Winds will be breezy through tonight, gusting to 30 mph:

Extreme, dangerous cold mid-week! Check out the forecast wind chills over the next 4 mornings. Wednesday by far will be the most extreme.

Watching closely Thursday night into early Friday morning for our next potential for some light accumulating snow…there’s a lot of risk with this as data continues to go back and forth but right now favoring the southern 2/3rds of Illinois and mainly I-70 and points south for Indiana and Ohio:
