The winter pattern is about to ramp up in a big way….but it’s not the snow that’s stealing the headlines. The extremely cold temperatures expected for next week are the big story, and rightfully so. Yes, this is related to the polar vortex. For portions of the Midwest, this will be once/twice in a generation type of arctic cold. Our snow chances will come from a series of clipper systems diving out of Canada, with a stronger clipper in a series of them diving in Sunday-Monday.
Potential is certainly there to lay some snow on the ground, setting the stage for the brutal cold to follow. Latest data suggests Wisconsin and Michigan may see incredible amounts of snow, especially with a system diving in Monday. Plan on even harsher temperatures next week where the deeper snowpack sets up.
We are talking about temperatures going to the EXTREME next week! This is not just your typical every winter cold blast. The Polar Vortex is a large reason behind this. The polar vortex got shredded apart back in early January, and our research suggested that 28-30 days after there would be a reverse in the zonal wind which would support a blocking pattern (-AO) over the arctic, and help to plunge this cold air southward, which is exactly what we are witnessing happening now. Watch this lobe dive in from the Arctic straight down into the Midwest by mid next week!
How cold is extremely cold? Check out this loop of GFS forecast temperatures through the middle of next week.
The wind chills being forecast are just….obscene! The data has been putting -60º wind chills into northern Illinois, and -20º+ down to central Indiana.
As an AVERAGE, temperatures are forecast to run 20º below normal for next week!
This will be life-threatening cold, and extremely dangerous for any animals left outside. Make sure you are making necessary preparations around your home!!
