1-24-18 Central Plains Forecast Update: Above normal temperatures continue this week…rain chance southeast Friday/Saturday. Details here. N.

Good Wednesday Morning! In today’s video we touch on the warming trend through the end of the week with clear skies to help melt off the heavy snowpack that’s covering most of the area. Still eyeing a storm system to affect parts of Kansas, Missouri, and potentially even Iowa as we get into the weekend. With temps being well above freezing, we only expect rain showers to affect these areas from this system. Another drop-off in temps is expected behind this storm system to start next week but another warming trend starts working in by mid-week. Please reach out if you have any questions and have a blessed day!

Today’s Video (8 min):

Current weather advisories across the area. Parts of northwest Iowa and northwest Nebraska currently under a dense fog advisory this morning until 10 am CT. Parts of Kansas seeing a fire weather watch until 6 pm CT Thursday. With temps warming, drier air, and high winds the risk is justified over these areas:

Expect the warming trend to continue into the weekend as high temps today reach up into the 40’s for most of Kansas & Missouri and mid 30’s for most of Nebraska & Iowa. 50’s and even 60’s across Kansas/Missouri tomorrow with temps getting into the 40’s and 50’s across Nebraska & Iowa. Temps will continue this warming trend as we move into the weekend before the next storm system:

Looking into the weekend, we see there is the possibility ahead of this system some rain/snow showers moving in over western Nebraska during the day Friday. For the rest of the central plains, expect the rain to start moving in to southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri Friday. The bulk of the rain is expected to start Friday into Saturday primarily affecting east Kansas and Missouri with some parts of this system potentially extending up into southeast Iowa. Expect the bulk of the rain to move east out of the area Saturday night.  We’ll continue to monitor and update as we hone in on the exact placement of this system throughout the next two days:

Total precipitation from this event showing most areas receiving at least a tenth to a half inch, with some areas possibly seeing upwards of an inch of rain across parts of eastern Kansas and western Missouri:

Expect temps to drop off behind this system as more cold air works in bringing most of the central plains back below freezing. We do see another warming trend into mid next week with an area of high pressure settling in and pulling up warmer air into the central plains from the south:
