1-23-18 Southern INDOT Evening Nowcast Update: Scattered snow squalls/drizzle risk lingers into Wednesday. N.

Good Tuesday evening.  Radar just before 7pm ET indicating areas of drizzle and bursts of snow showers this evening.  Most of this activity is confined to the Seymour district, and most numerous in northern portions of the area.  This activity continues to move east southeast.  The squalls can put down quick local coatings of snow this evening.  Best chance for this looks to be in northeastern portions of the Seymour district.

TONIGHT: The most concentrated area of snow squalls/drizzle will slide east over the next few hours, but additional activity likely keeps developing on the radar overnight.  At times it could fall as drizzle, and at times bursts of snow showers.  We note a trend for the activity to increase a bit as we enter the morning rush hour Wednesday.  It will be important to monitor conditions in the morning for slick spots (especially those bridges and side roads).  Again the activity won’t be widespread, but areas of slick spots will be the concern.   Notice this threat lingers for much of the day Wednesday, most concentration across the northern portions of the Seymour district throughout the day.

Why not “all snow”?  Despite below freezing temperatures at the surface and aloft, we are limiting saturation in the portion of the clouds where snow is generated.  This is why it will be a mix of both snow squalls and drizzle.

The concern will be temperatures that fall below freezing tonight.  As of 7pm ET, temperatures across the area range from 32-35º north to south.  The continued light precipitation will lead to slick spot concerns overnight and Wednesday morning. Here is the latest model guidance for temperatures through Wednesday evening.  Temperatures fall to 28-30º tonight.

West northwest winds will remain breezy through the evening, but slacken off overnight into Wednesday morning.  Maximum gusts decrease from 20 mph through 10pm to 10mph beyond midnight into Wednesday morning.
