1-22-18 Iowa Forecast: Blizzard conditions continue northwest into tonight…improving weather mid-week. N.

Video (6 min):

Blizzard and winter storm warnings continue through midnight CT across northwest portions of the state:

Simulated radar 5am CT this morning to 9am CT Tuesday: Very heavy snow will continue to ramp across the northwest portions of the state, with the snow intensity gradually decreasing through the evening hours.  Scattered snow showers linger Tuesday morning across eastern portions of the state, then dry by Tuesday afternoon.

Here is the latest hi-res guidance for snow accumulations today…this goes out through the next 18 hours.  Keep in mind there will still be light snow falling beyond this time-frame.  Areas from Sioux City, Spencer, Estherville to Ledyard see the highest totals ranging from 10-15″.

A look at total snow through Tuesday morning to cover the entire event.  Just a very impressive band of snow.

Wind will be a big problem today, which is why we are under “blizzard” warnings.  Gusts over 40 mph likely all day long in areas under the heavy snowfall band.  Visibility will be near zero and travel will be next to impossible in these areas.

Much calmer weather returns for the middle part of the week.  Another front looks to pass through Friday night/early Saturday bringing a rain chance, especially across the southeast portions of the state.  Temperatures will warm above average ahead of this front.  As of now, Saturday and Sunday are looking dry with slightly above normal temperatures.

Total precipitation will be healthy for this week, with most of this falling today into tonight.  Many spots see 0.5″-1″ of moisture, Over 1″ amounts north and west.
